The Martyrdom Of Marlboro Man (bottom left on panel) is based on ideas from the book The Martyrdom Of Man by Winwood Reade.
The artwork plays on the idea that the famous Marlboro Man used in tobacco advertising campaigns in the USA from 1954 to 1999 became a martyr. As the word is most commonly used to describe an individual who sacrifices his or her life in order to further a cause or belief for others.
The three men who appeared in Marlboro advertisements - Wayne McLaren, David McLean, and Dick Hammer - died of lung cancer.
